James D: Season Review Part Two

James continued his three-part interview reflecting on his European gold medal in Zurich and his thoughts on competing in the Diamond League races that followed…

“I didn’t think I was at my best at the World Championships in Moscow 2013. Although I made the final, this year for me has been my most consistent,” stated James.

Dasaolu ran under 10.1 seconds on seven occasions, at Championships and Diamond league meets.

“This season has been about learning to execute my race against athletes of the same calibre.”

“I just needed to repeat my semi final performance in the final and I would come away with a medal.”

“After running in the semi finals I knew I was the quickest qualifier. I knew there was a medal up for grabs, and I just needed to repeat my semi final performance in the final and I would come away with a medal.

“I gained a lot of confidence from that round and it was just about keeping calm in the final.”

“On reflection the Europeans produced my first outdoor medal, I would have liked to have run quicker, but my goal was to pick up a medal. At Championships, that’s what it is all about, and fortunately for me on the day the performance was quick enough for gold.”

“I was really happy to win and the support which I had from my team. It proves I can go to Championships and produce the form to compete for medals.”

After James ran in Zurich, he returned there a week or so later to compete at the Diamond League event followed by the finale in Brussels.

“The two Diamond League final races after the Europeans were two of the most high calibre races I’ve competed in.”

“Justin Gatlin, Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay all competed. They’re some of the quickest guys in history. So being in a lane beside them and being able to run alongside them has given me a lot of confidence going forward.”

“I’m not a million miles away from competing with those athletes on a consistent basis. So my coach and I were pretty happy with what I had managed to demonstrate in both of those races.”
